Values

  1.  Seek out collaboration.
Your not always going to be the smartest lady in the room. Be vulnerable enough to learn from others, seek out their expertise, and then learn from them. What would classrooms look like if we moved away from a hive-mentality and really sought out others with radically different ideas, leanings, and experiences from our own?
  2.  Advocate for those whose voices are hushed.
This includes yourself. When you find someone has been silenced, find ways to use your power to advocate for them. If you are finding yourself be silenced, find someone who you trust to seek guidance from. Do not let time make you complacent. Even if you can’t fix the silence in a day, do not let time erode your care for them.
  3.  Put others first.
It doesn’t matter if it is the community member you’re working with or the grad student down the hall. When you work with someone, put them first. Listen, authentically listen, and engage with them. Find out their needs and wants, and then be humble and transparent enough to share yours.
  4. Learn when to say no.
Take the experiences that enrich you. Be willing to say no the experiences that are “favors” for others, especially when these favors are mutually reciprocated. Learn when to say no when your health (mental, physical, spiritual, etc.) will be put at risk. Learn to say no so you make time for the yes(es) you want to have.
